One 60-day cruise circling the Land Down Under was terminated following the tragic passing of an elderly woman who was stranded by the vessel on a distant tropical isle.

The elderly woman had been hiking on Lizard Island with shipmates from the vessel, but parted ways from the group for a break. The ship sailed away leaving her and went back after some time after the personnel discovered the lady was missing.

A large-scale search operation located her remains the following day.

Officials are investigating the tragedy, alongside investigators and the medical examiner.

The CEO of the voyage organizer said that passengers and staff on the vessel were informed that the remainder of the journey had been cancelled due to the "unfortunate death and previous mechanical issues".

In a statement, he further stated that travelers would be issued a complete reimbursement, and said the operator was working "to coordinate the return journeys of the individuals via specially arranged planes".

Authorities also issued an updated statement, and said they had "provided a order to the Captain" prohibiting any new passengers from getting on the liner.

The representative said that they would attend the liner in the port city upon its arrival.

Sequence of Incidents

The liner initially left the coastal city on the 24th of October, and was just two days into the expedition at the point of the senior passenger's death. Lizard Island was the first stop on the journey.

Passengers on the ship - who usually pay large sums of currency to participate in the voyage - were transported there for a day trip with the possibility of trekking or underwater exploration.

The daughter of the victim said that her loved ones was "surprised and saddened that the liner left the island after an organised tour without my mother".

Through her comments, she characterized her mum as an "energetic 80-year-old" who was a affiliate of a hiking organization.

"From the little details we have been told, it seems that there was a failure of responsibility and ordinary reasoning," she said.

She added that she wished the examination would be able to identify what "the organization should have performed that might have preserved Mother's life".

"Based on information from the authorities that it was a exceptionally warm day, and mother became unwell on the mountain ascent," she explained.

"They requested her to return, alone. Then the ship sailed away, apparently without doing a passenger count.

"During some point in that sequence, or not long after, mum passed away, without company."

Operator Response

In a statement, the Chief Executive affirmed that the organization was "working closely with authorities to aid their inquiry".

He stated that the organization was "deeply sorry that this has transpired" and had extended its complete assistance to the relatives.

Maritime Business Procedures

The ship caters for up to a hundred twenty passengers with 46 staff, according to corporate information. It was specifically designed to access isolated areas of the Australian coastline and is fitted with "auxiliary vessels" - minor craft used to ferry passengers on day excursions.

Events like this are rare, and cruise ships have procedures to record which individuals are embarking or leaving, according to travel authorities.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] on the ship simply isn't an choice," an authority stated.

Vessel operators consider these methods extremely carefully and have "sophisticated systems in place to prevent such events from happening," the expert further stated.

"This appears to be most likely a stunning - and tragic - isolated incident."
