Trump Calls for Jailing of Chicago Leader and State Executive as National Guard Arrive in Metropolis

Ex-President Donald J. Trump on Wednesday demanded the incarceration of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of failing to protect ICE agents.

"Chicago's Mayor should be jailed for endangering ICE Officers!" Trump wrote on social media Wednesday morning. "The Illinois governor as well!"

The two leaders identify as the Democratic faction.

Trump's statements come alongside the arrival of state military troops in the Chicago region under orders from the current government, despite strong objections from state officials such as Pritzker and Johnson.

"This marks not the first instance where Trump has sought to have a Black man unjustly detained," Mayor Johnson stated on Wednesday. "I am staying anywhere."

Pritzker also replied via social platforms, stating: "I will not yield. Now Trump is demanding arrests of democratically chosen representatives checking his power. What's next on the path to complete autocracy?"

By Wednesday morning, National Guard troops from Texas had arrived at the Elwood training facility, a military installation roughly 80 kilometers from Chicago, as the federal government pushes forward with its aggressive crime strategy and mass deportation efforts.

Trump has labeled Chicago a "dangerous hellhole", despite official statistics indicate notable reductions in most criminal activities, including murders.

That day, two hundred Texas National Guard troops were scheduled to arrive to the region, with an additional three hundred state military forces readying for deployment, according to sources. Authorities indicated the troops would avoid police functions but would protect federal immigration agents and their facilities.

Military personnel in combat attire with state guard insignia were spotted at the US army reserve center in the town. Vehicles marked "Emergency Disaster Services" delivered sanitation facilities and essential items. Mobile units were set up in rows. Additional fencing was installed around the compound.

Aviation authorities imposed no-fly zones over the military base for security reasons until 6 December.

The administration has intensified immigration enforcement in the city in recent weeks, triggering demonstrations, particularly near an immigration center in a Chicago suburb.

On Monday, state and city initiated legal action targeting the federal government, attempting to halt the National Guard deployment, urging a court to stop what they call "Trump's long-declared 'Battle'" on Chicago and Illinois, labeling it "illegal and risky".

Legal proceedings on their lawsuit is set for the next day.

Mayor Johnson also issued an executive order on that day banning federal immigration agents and others from using municipal facilities as operation bases for deportation efforts.

The governor has accused the president of using military forces as "staged tools" and "chess pieces".

During a press briefing on the previous day, he said that the president is attempting to "justify and normalize the deployment of military personnel under his direct command."

The historic federal law restricts the army's involvement in civilian law enforcement. Yet, Trump has said he would be prepared to activate the emergency powers, which allows a commander-in-chief to send active duty military in states that are failing to put down an uprising or are resisting federal law.

After beginning his second term, the president has dispatched or discussed deploying troops to at least 10 cities, such as Baltimore; Washington DC; New Orleans and California cities like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, arguing that the military presence is essential to combat crime and protect ICE officers.

Statistics shows that serious offenses across the US has declined in recent years. In Chicago, for instance, homicides were reduced nearly one-third to under three hundred through August, per police data.

A recent poll released on Wednesday revealed that most Americans oppose the deployment of military forces without an foreign danger.
